U.S. Election showcase includes many interactive stories devoted to the electoral process and past and present U.S. Presidential Elections. This site is a part of Grolier. If you access it from school, you will not need a password. From home, the username is lpselem and the password is research.
Campaign Classics and Role of the Media are great prompts to get kids thinking about the slogans, posters and television advertisements for Senator Obama and Senator McCain. Ask students to think about how the candidates portray themselves and then let them work in small groups to brainstorm new slogans, posters, etc. for the candidates.
Show students or patrons the 2008 Campaign Timeline. Then pose discussion questions like: What are some controversies surrounding the election? Do you think either party or either party’s candidates have a better chance with specific groups of voters?
Let your students or patrons play Win the Vote - an interactive game where students rack up “votes” towards a presidential victory by answering questions about the election process.
For additional lesson plans and activities about the Presidential Election, utilize the Teacher Materials provided in the Feature Showcase, which lists writing assignments, research projects, discussion questions, and creative activities you can use with your students or patrons.
